Level 2 (A2 – Elementary)

Introduction

Level 2 builds on the foundation of Level 1 and helps learners develop greater confidence in using English for everyday communication. At this stage, students move beyond simple phrases and start forming longer sentences, engaging in short conversations, and understanding more detailed information in familiar contexts.

The focus of this level is on expanding vocabulary, improving grammar accuracy, and practicing practical communication skills needed in daily life, travel, and social interactions.

Key Features of Level 2:

  • Development of functional communication in everyday situations.
  • Expansion of vocabulary (around 1,000–1,500 words).
  • Focus on core grammar structures, including:
    • Present Continuous (I am eating, she is working)
    • Past Simple (I visited, they played)
    • Future forms (going to, will)
    • Comparatives and superlatives (bigger, the best)
    • Countable/uncountable nouns & quantifiers (some, many, much).
  • Increased emphasis on listening and speaking through role-plays and dialogues.
  • Practice with short reading passages and guided writing tasks.

Objectives

  • Speaking & Listening
  1. Ask for and provide personal information in more detail (family, work, hobbies, travel).
  2. Talk about past experiences, daily routines, and future plans.
  3. Use expressions for shopping, ordering food, asking for directions, and making appointments.
  4. Express opinions, likes/dislikes, preferences, and simple comparisons (better/worse, bigger/smaller).
  5. Understand the main idea in short spoken exchanges on familiar topics (school, work, holidays).
  • Reading
  1. Read and understand short, simple texts such as emails, postcards, stories, and personal letters.
  2. Identify specific information in notices, timetables, menus, and advertisements.
  3. Follow short, simple instructions and directions in everyday contexts.
  4. Recognize the meaning of frequently used vocabulary in familiar contexts.
  • Writing
  1. Write short connected sentences about familiar topics (daily life, family, hobbies, past events).
  2. Produce simple notes, emails, and short messages (e.g., “I’m going to the park tomorrow”).
  3. Fill in forms with more detailed information (address, job, travel details, emergency information).
  4. Write simple descriptions of people, places, objects, and events.
  • Grammar & Vocabulary
  1. Use key grammar structures with some accuracy:
  • Present Continuous for actions now.
  • Past Simple for completed events.
  • Future forms (going to, will).
  • Comparatives & superlatives (taller, more interesting, the best).
  • Countable & uncountable nouns with quantifiers (some, any, much, many, a lot of).
  • There is/there are; can/can’t for ability and permission.
  1. Use a vocabulary of around 1,000–1,500 words related to:
  • Travel & holidays
  • Food & shopping
  • Health & lifestyle
  • Daily routines & free time
  • Celebrations & traditions
  • Work & school basics

By the end of Level 2, learners will be able to:

  • Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information.
  • Talk about past experiences, daily activities, future plans, and personal preferences.
  • Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to shopping, travel, food, work, and health.
  • Write short connected texts such as messages, notes, and simple descriptions.
  • Read and understand short, simple stories, personal letters, and everyday materials like advertisements or instructions.
