Level 3 (B1 – Pre-Intermediate)

Introduction

Level 3 marks a significant step forward in learners’ English journey. At this stage, students move from basic communication toward greater fluency and confidence. They begin to connect ideas, express opinions, and interact in a wider variety of social and professional situations.

Learners at this level expand their vocabulary, improve grammatical accuracy, and practice using English for real-life purposes such as travel, work, study, and personal communication.

Key Features of Level 3:

  • Practical communication skills for everyday life, study, and work.
  • Expansion of vocabulary to around 1,500–2,000 words.
  • Focus on grammar structures, including:
    • Past continuous vs. past simple (e.g., I was walking when it started to rain).
    • Present perfect (e.g., I have visited London).
    • Future forms (will, going to, present continuous for plans).
    • Modals of advice & obligation (should, must, have to).
    • Comparative & complex sentences with linkers (because, although, so).
  • Development of reading skills through short stories, dialogues, and simple articles.
  • Listening practice with real-life contexts such as travel, entertainment, and health.
  • Writing practice with emails, notes, short reports, and opinion paragraphs

  • Reading
  1. Read and understand short articles, stories, emails, and reports on familiar topics.
  2. Identify main ideas and details in texts of one to two pages.

  4. Infer the meaning of new words from context.
  5. Follow simple arguments or explanations in a text.

  • Writing
  1. Write connected paragraphs (8–10 sentences) about personal experiences, future plans, or familiar topics.

  4. Express and support simple opinions in writing (e.g., I think … because …).

  • Modals for obligation/advice: should, must, have to.
  • Comparatives and superlatives with more detail (much better, the most exciting).
  • Adverbs of frequency and manner (always, usually, carefully, quickly).
  • Linking words for complex sentences (because, although, when, after).
