Level 3 (B1 – Pre-Intermediate)

Introduction

Level 3 marks a significant step forward in learners’ English journey. At this stage, students move from basic communication toward greater fluency and confidence. They begin to connect ideas, express opinions, and interact in a wider variety of social and professional situations.

Learners at this level expand their vocabulary, improve grammatical accuracy, and practice using English for real-life purposes such as travel, work, study, and personal communication.

Key Features of Level 3:

  • Practical communication skills for everyday life, study, and work.
  • Expansion of vocabulary to around 1,500–2,000 words.
  • Focus on grammar structures, including:
    • Past continuous vs. past simple (e.g., I was walking when it started to rain).
    • Present perfect (e.g., I have visited London).
    • Future forms (will, going to, present continuous for plans).
    • Modals of advice & obligation (should, must, have to).
    • Comparative & complex sentences with linkers (because, although, so).
  • Development of reading skills through short stories, dialogues, and simple articles.
  • Listening practice with real-life contexts such as travel, entertainment, and health.
  • Writing practice with emails, notes, short reports, and opinion paragraphs

Objectives

  • Speaking & Listening
  1. Participate in conversations about everyday topics (work, study, travel, hobbies, lifestyle).
  2. Ask for and give opinions, suggestions, and advice in simple language.
  3. Narrate events in the past, including background actions and experiences.
  4. Discuss future plans and goals using different future forms.
  5. Understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar matters such as school, work, and leisure.
  6. Follow the gist of conversations, announcements, or instructions in public contexts (e.g., airports, shopping, restaurants).

  • Reading
  1. Read and understand short articles, stories, emails, and reports on familiar topics.
  2. Identify main ideas and details in texts of one to two pages.
  3. Recognize and use common linking words (but, because, although, so, when).
  4. Infer the meaning of new words from context.
  5. Follow simple arguments or explanations in a text.

  • Writing
  1. Write connected paragraphs (8–10 sentences) about personal experiences, future plans, or familiar topics.
  2. Produce structured emails, letters, or reports using appropriate greetings and endings.
  3. Write short stories or diary entries describing past events and experiences.
  4. Express and support simple opinions in writing (e.g., I think … because …).
  5. Use linking words to connect sentences logically

Grammar & Vocabulary

  1. Use key grammar structures with better accuracy:
  • Past continuous vs. past simple (I was eating when the phone rang).
  • Present perfect simple for experiences (I have visited Paris).
  • Future forms: will, going to, present continuous (I’m meeting my friend tomorrow).
  • Modals for obligation/advice: should, must, have to.
  • Comparatives and superlatives with more detail (much better, the most exciting).
  • Adverbs of frequency and manner (always, usually, carefully, quickly).
  • Linking words for complex sentences (because, although, when, after).
  1. Build vocabulary to around 1,500–2,000 words, covering:
  • Travel & holidays
  • Media & entertainment
  • Health & lifestyle
  • Environment & nature
  • Celebrations & traditions
  • Jobs & workplace basics
  • Free time & hobbies
  • Future plans & goals

By the end of Level 3, learners will be able to:

  • Participate in longer conversations on familiar topics, such as holidays, hobbies, work, and lifestyle.
  • Express opinions, preferences, and ideas with simple reasons and explanations.
  • Understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar matters.
  • Read and understand simple articles, stories, and everyday texts with increasing confidence.
  • Write short, connected texts such as letters, diaries, reports, and emails describing experiences, feelings, and events.
